英文解釈に必要な用語たち

前置詞とは

前置詞は、名詞または名詞相当語句の前に置かれ、それらと他の語句との関係を示す語。形容詞句または副詞句をつくります。
英語では preposition と言います。
２語以上が集まって１つの前置詞として働くものもあります(群前置詞とよばれます)。

例 about, at, by, for, from, in, off, of, on, to, under, with など
群前置詞：because of, in front of, by means of, as to など

例文
1. Look at the map on the wall.　壁の地図を見て。

at と on が前置詞であり、それぞれ後ろに名詞の the map と the wall が来ています。
at the map は動詞の look を修飾しているので副詞句で(at the map で副詞の役割を果たしている)であり、on the wall は直前の名詞 the map を修飾しているので形容詞句(on the wall で形容詞の役割を果たしている)です。

2. She put the letter on the desk in front of me.　彼女は私の前にある机の上に手紙を置いた。

on と in front of が前置詞であり、それぞれ後ろに名詞の the desk と代名詞の me が来ています。
on the desk は動詞の put を修飾しているので副詞句で(on the desk で副詞の役割を果たしている)であり、in front of me は直前の名詞 the desk を修飾しているので形容詞句(in front of me で形容詞の役割を果たしている)です。
